Tackle Football

“During the 1930 Rose Bowl football game between the University of Southern California and Michigan, Michigan fumbled the ball.  A USC player, Roy Rigel, recovered the ball and, to the shock and horror of his teammates, Roy picked up the ball and began to run the wrong way.  Not for just a few yards but, like a man possessed, Roy ran for 95 yards.  It wasn’t until just before he reached the wrong goal line that he was tackled by one of his own team mates”

As I read this story this week, I couldn’t help but to reflect on how often I see people “running the wrong way” in life.  They are making crazy choices that are destroying them and the people around them.  I believe that at times God truly wants us to tackle our team mates and keep them from reaching the wrong goal line.  In this story, Roy lost an important game.  But it was a game.  Yet, there are others who are living life as if it were a game.  Their choices will cause them to lose much more than Roy and his team did that day.

Today, take a look around you.  Who do you see running the wrong way in life?  Have you tried to get their attention?  Are you praying for them?  Are you extending love, mercy and grace?  “Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy” (St. Jude).
