But God raised [Jesus] from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. ~ Acts 2:24
The agony of death. The Greek word used for “agony” is the same word often translated “birth pangs”. Jesus may be the only Man who truly knows about birth pangs. Jesus endured the birth pangs of death while He hung on the cross.
Yet, He did so without any epidural. I hope you are impressed!
Jesus had no Demerol or hot baths or hot showers to ease the pain. He did not have someone cheering Him on with soothing words and back rubs in between contractions.
No, Jesus was on His own. He endured the agony of the cross while being jeered and taunted. But He was not simply giving birth to death. Rather, Jesus was giving birth to life, NEW life. He was giving birth to eternal life, resurrected life.
I remember when my children were born how they laid them in my arms. And the agony of birth gave way to the joy of this new life. It was not erased from my memory. It simply made it more than worth the pain.
Every time a lost one is reborn in Christ, Jesus holds them in His arms. He rejoices over this new life, this resurrected life. The agony of the cross is justified when a child of God is born, reborn in Him.
