And He Will Be Called “Jesus”

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

There’s just something about that name

Master, Savior, Jesus

Like the fragrance after the rain

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus

Let all Heaven and Earth proclaim

Kings and kingdoms Will all pass away

But there’s something about that Name.

And the angel, Gabriel, said to Mary, “You will call Him Jesus”.

There is something about choosing a name for your child.  I think God gives us nine months because it takes us that long for parents to agree on a name.  We argued and fussed over names, their meanings, and their implied meanings.  It would have been great if God would have taken the pressure off and told us what to name them.  Mary & Joseph didn’t even have to think about it.  It was a done deal.

Names were so important in that culture.  They are still important today.  Our name is the only thing we really can call our own.  It is our identity; our reputation.  A name marks a person.

Every time God’s name is recorded in scripture, it is in the context of a story telling us a little about His character and Person.  And here we see His name: Jesus.

Jesus.  It means “the Lord saves”.  And Christ means “anointed one”.  So Jesus Christ means “the Lord’s Anointed One Saves”.  God was telling Mary ahead of time the destiny of this Baby Boy.  He would be the One to save her people.

Oh, what a beautiful name! Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. The One who will save us from our selves!

Merry Christmas!
