Hidden in Plain Sight
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! ~ Luke 1:41-42
Tonight we light the Christ candle on the Advent wreath. We recognize the True Light that has come into the world.
Mary traveled to see her cousin, Elizabeth, who was expecting a child in her old age. Mary had just received word from the Angel, Gabriel, that she would give birth to the Messiah, the Savior of the world. And she was perhaps only a few weeks pregnant herself.
When Elizabeth saw Mary, when she heard the sound of Mary’s voice, John leaped in her womb and she was filled with the Holy Spirit. For the first time, we hear of a woman being filled with the Holy Spirit. God never ceases to amaze us! He is always doing the unusual in the midst of the ordinary. A women passed her time to bear children, bears a child and is filled with the Spirit of God.
Even more unusual is her unborn child. John (the Baptist) recognized the presence of the Christ child. One unborn child recognizes the Light of the World who is only a fetus in His mother’s womb. Yet, you and I struggle to recognize Him here and now. We have eyes to see and ears to hear, but we often fail to see Jesus hidden in plain sight. We miss His presence and fail to hear His voice calling to us.
This Christmas, if you want to see Jesus, look for Him where the ordinary and unusual collide. You will find Him hidden in plain sight. You will hear His voice and catch a glimpse of His presence. And you will find yourself exclaiming, “Blessed is the Child Mary has born to the world”!
