Faith, Hope, Love

We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love for all the saints because of your hope laid up for you in heaven. Colossians 1:3-5

Social media has some great qualities, however, increasing our faith/hope/love for one another is probably not one of them. So many people criticizing and condemning one another. And I am guilty of adding my own negative energy from time to time. But I hope with this blog to at least at to the positive energy of social media and, perhaps, create momentum.

In the 1st century, letters were the means of “social media”. That’s right. People wrote actual letters and sent them via carriers…on foot no less. Sometimes St. Paul and the others had to write difficult things in their letters, but they always tried to include hope.

Paul begins his letter to the Church in Colosse with affirming words that he prays for them often. As modern day pastors, we work hard to remember our own congregation in our prayers. My current prayer life has my congregation broken into groups of 20 that I pray for in five day cycles. So, if you are part of our congregation, you can trust you are prayed for at least every 5th day (Monday through Friday).

And when Paul prayed, he focused on three things: their faith, their hope, and their love.

Their faith inspired Paul and your faith inspires me. I pray for your faith…that it would increase, it would multiply, it would influence others. May your faith in Jesus Christ not be in vain. May your faith increase as your learn to trust Him more. May your faith multiply by influencing others around you.

Their hope inspired Paul, too. And your hope inspires me. Your hope is in Christ and all the promises He has given to you. Those promises and treasurers are stored up in heaven. Some of those promises will be fulfilled in this life and you will enjoy some treasurers here on earth. St. James says that every good and perfect gift comes from heaven above. May you rejoice in every gift you receive knowing it is sent from heaven’s storehouses. May your hope spur you on to do great things both big and small.

Their love inspired Paul, too. And your love inspires me. They had a love for all the saints [disciples]. You have a great love for one another. Jesus said that others would know we are His followers by how we love one another. May your love increase. May your love thrive and survive the struggles of this life. May your love overcome injustice and hatred. And may your love move mountains.

Today is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice in it. And may you know that you are prayed for and that your faith, hope, and love is inspiring someone else.

  1. Pastor JoAnne, thanks for sharing your 5 day prayer cycle. Sometimes, it is a bit overwhelming to pray for all those God has put on my heart. Your idea is very helpful!
