We are All Fools

Sunday is April 1st. Here, in America, we call it April Fool’s Day. We have a day set aside to celebrate…fools. It seems like we do that the other 364 days of the year. I’m not sure why we need a special day to call attention to it.

I have a confession. I hate April Fool’s Day!

I hate it with a passion. I have always hated this day! People going around all day trying to make other people look like idiots? Ten minutes on Twitter should convince us that we don’t need any help with that.

Today is also Easter Sunday.

In St. Paul’s letter to the church in Corinth he tells them that the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. In other words, the message of Christ seems ridiculous to those who do not know Jesus.

There are many things in this world that I find ridiculous like twerking and WWE and John Piper. But not faith. Even when I was an atheist, I admired those who had great faith. I knew that we all need another source of “inspiration”. We all have days when we can barely put one foot in front of the other. On those days, we need a source of hope that is rooted in a higher power.

St. Paul continues his thought saying that this message of Christ may seem ridiculous to those who don’t know him. However, to those who do know Jesus, we have discovered a Source of power that has the ability to save us.

Save us from what? Mostly from ourselves. We are our greatest downfall. We are experts at self-sabotage. But Jesus offers us a Source of power to overcome. The Source? It is his Spirit living within us.

On Easter Sunday, I hope you will find your way to a church. May you discover the Source of power and the foolish message of the cross. It has the strength that you need for today. And it has the wisdom you need for tomorrow.

Today, may you become a fool for Christ! May you find strength in weakness as you humble yourself before God.
