Creator: Day Three

There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every [person] which cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator, made known through Jesus [Christ]. – Blaise Pascal

Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician in the 17th century. He was also a theologian and philosopher who embraced reason to explain God. He saw that mankind seemed bent on filling some inner void. It was this universal phenomenon that influenced his belief in a “God-shaped hole”.

Many theologians and philosophers today recognize this same void in people. In every culture and country and context people have an insatiable hunger they are trying to fill, a void. They fill it in many ways. They seek food, alcohol, sex, and drugs. But they also try to fill it with busyness, work, entertainment, and shopping. It is a spiritual vacuum left by the Creator of our souls. We were created to be in relationship with Him. We were created as spiritual beings with a desire for a spiritual connection with the Divine.

In what ways have you tried to fill the void? Check all that apply. Circle ones you have used in the last 3-6 months. Underline any that feel excessive in your life right now.

Choose one of the above and ask God to help you fill the void with Him. Write out your prayer in your journal.
